Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who just jumped in the race to the White House, was hit by CNN fire during a recent televised interview after the host attacked him for his states’ rights view of gay marriage.
Rubio told CNN’s Jake Tapper he believes gay marriage belongs in the deciding hands of states, according to the Constitution.
“I [have] not, for example, ever supported a federal constitutional amendment that defined marriage because I believe states define marriage in their laws,” he said, during the interview. “And if, in fact, people [want gay marriage], they can petition their state legislature to change the law.”
Tapper, citing polls numbers to show many Republicans now support gay marriage, said Rubio was in conflict with modern-day politics.
“You are casting yourself as a candidate of a new generation, but there is an issue where you are very out of step with younger voters – even younger Republican voters,” he said, Raw Story reproted. “According to a Pew poll, 61 percent of Republican voters under the age of 30, I believe, support same-sex marriage. On that issue, same-sex marriage, senator, you’re the candidate of yesterday.”
Tapper’s crack comes on the heels of Rubio painting Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton as a “leader of yesterday” during his formal announcement to enter the presidential race.
