The State Department is in the final stages of crafting a recommendation to remove communist Cuba from America’s list of nations that sponsor terrorism – an action that coincides with President Obama’s upcoming summit with Raul Castro.
Obama himself ordered his administration to look into taking Cuba off the list, saying in mid-December diplomtic talks with the country’s leaders were going well. The president is due to leave Wednesday for a trip through Jamaica and Panama, in part for a two-day Summit of the Americas that includes a face-to-face meeting with his Cuban counterpart, Castro.
Reuters reported the State Department could have its recommendations to Obama in time for this summit.
For roughy 50 years, America has maintained arms-length ties with Cuba. Havana officials have demanded Cuba’s removal from America’s terrorist-sponsorship list before agreeing to formal reestablishment of ties.
Cuba’s label came by way of its assistance to Marxists in 1982.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest, meanwhile, downplayed the looming State Department recommendation, saying the diplomatic maneuver would “move to the next stage relatively soon” but Americans shouldn’t “necessarily expect a final decision in the next day or two,” as Obama would still have to give his stamp of approval, Reuters reported.
