White House contender Hillary Clinton’s announced campaign didn’t come off completely without a hitch: Shortly after declaring, her own former presidential campaign manager said he’s not yet ready to back her run.
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, who served as Clinton’s right-hand man during her 2000 run for the Senate in New York, said he’s waiting for her to express more specifics about her policies and platforms.
“I think like a lot of people in this country I want to see a vision,” de Blasio said to Chuck Todd during a “Meet the Press” interview on NBC. “Substance and vision does it.”
De Blasio’s announcement is somewhat of a shocker for political insiders say his thumbs-up for a Clinton campaign should have been a shoe-in. The two have been longtime political buddies; most recently, Clinton hosted a 2013 fundraiser for the then-mayoral candidate.
But de Blasio’s hesitation to endorse doesn’t mean he thinks Clinton is unqualified. He did say he thinks Clinton would be an excellent Democratic candidate for the White House.
“She is one of the most qualified people to ever run for this office,” he said, the Hill reported. “I think she’s a tremendous public servant. She doesn’t need to be vetted.”
But he said he wants more from her.
“It’s a much different time than 2008,” de Blasio said. “There are a lot of new issues and new material for Hillary to address. … She does need to address the issues and that can be done with or without a primary.”
