New York students flee Common Core

Students, parents and even teachers unions are rebelling against Common Core.

An overwhelming majority of students in many New York school districts – backed by parents and even some teachers’ unions – have rebelled against Common Core federal standards and opted out of taking the exams that started this week.

Western Journalism reported in one Long Island-area district, fully 82 percent of parents opted their children out of the tests. Other districts in the state, meanwhile, reported opt-out rates of 50 percent or more.

Despite the fact parents, students and even unions like the New York State United Teachers have turned up their noses at the exams, some school officials are still touting the Common Core benefits and downplaying the backlash.

“You’re going to have one million kids take these assessments in the next two weeks,” said High Achievement New York executive director Stephen Sigmund, Western Journalism said. “So you can’t lose sight of the fact that the vast majority are taking the assessments.”

He then blasted Common Core opponents.

“They shouldn’t be encouraging kids to refuse tests, and particularly the teachers unions shouldn’t be encouraging them,” he said, Western Journalism reported.

The rebellion against Common Core is not confined to New York; as WND previously reported, students, teachers and parents all around the nation have been refusing to support the federal standards.
