Rand Paul takes lead over Hillary in Iowa

Sen. Rand Paul

Hillary Clinton may have been the talk of the town – but that’s so yesterday. Coming on strong for the White House is just-announced Republican contender Rand Paul, and the senator from Kentucky seems to be taking the steam out of the former secretary of state’s political aspirations.

In Colorado and Iowa, the latest votes are in and clear: Paul is an emerging candidate of choice. A Quinnipiac University Swing State Poll released Thursday shows Clinton’s favorability factor has fallen in Colorado and Iowa over the last few weeks, leaving plenty of room for Paul to make a splash. Her biggest problem?

Honesty and trustworthiness, the poll found.

All potential Republican candidates score well against Clinton in these two states, Quinnipiac finds. And in Virginia, another swing state, Clinton’s favor has pretty much stagnated.

Her poor showing is only bearing well for Paul, though.

“These numbers are a boost for U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky as he formally launches his campaign,” said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac poll. “Ominous for Hillary Clinton is the broad scope of the movement today compared to her showing in Quinnipiac University’s mid-February survey. It isn’t just one or two Republicans who are stepping up. It’s virtually the entire GOP field that is running better against her.”

Paul, meanwhile, put the nation on notice those poll dips Clinton’s been experiencing may soon get worse.

A day after he announced his run for the presidency, Paul said to a national press gathering: “I think there are things that went on at the Clinton Foundation that are going to shock people and I think they’re going to make people question whether or not she should be president or not.”

The Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation has just suffered criticisms for taking contributions from Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Former president Bill Clinton defended those contributions, saying the money had allowed the foundation to do “a lot more good than harm,” ABC News reported.
