A white South Carolina police officer was arrested and charged with murder after authorities said they viewed a video of him shooting a black man who was fleeing in the back.
Killed was Walter Scott, 50.
Fox News reported North Charleston city patrolman Michael Thomas Slager, 33, stopped Scott for a traffic issue over the weekend. The video, first obtained by The Post and Courier, a Charleston media outlet, shows a confrontation ensued, Scott ran and Slager seemed to hit Scott with a stun gun. The video then shows Slager firing eight shots into the back of Scott, who’s running from the scene. Scott falls on the eighth shot.
Slager then approaches Scott, who’s unmoving, and cuffs him.
North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey announced Slager was facing murder charges during a brief news conference late Tuesday.
He first said Slager seemed to have made “a bad decision,” Fox News reported. Summey then added: “When you’re wrong, you’re wrong. When you make a bad decision, don’t care if you’re behind the shield or a citizen on the street, you have to live with that decision.”
Slager’s attorney, David Aylor, stepped back from defending him after the video surfaced.
Meanwhile, Scott’s brother said the video has brough some comfort becasue “we have received the truth [and] through the process, justice has been served,” Fox News reported.
Scott’s family has also indicated plans to sue the police department. The FBI has announced intent to join the investigation.
