The good doctor, Ben Carson, will make his presidential aspirations known to the world on May 4 in his home town of Detroit, he announced.
Carson, the first Republican to launch an exploratory committee to test the presidential waters, is nonetheless coming in fourth, at best, to make any White House run official. Sen Ted Cruz announced first, then Sen. Rand Paul, and most recently, Sen. Marco Rubio. Democratic Party contender Hillary Clinton just entered the race, too.
Carson has been out and about on the media trail, however, giving interviews and honing his political rhetoric and platforms. He’s also been boltering his staff, and many political insiders say the signs are all there: Carson’s upcoming announcement will be that he’s running.
He chose Detroit Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts for his venue, the Hill reported.
Carson was raised in poverty by a single mother in Detroit. One of the city’s high schools has since been named after him, in part to recognize his rise through the ranks of a very humble beginning.
His political team affirms Carson has a strong support system in place in several key voting areas, including in all 99 of Iowa’s counties. His detractors, however, say Carson’s appeal outside of a very limited circle of conservatives is weak and he makes too many media flubs to be considered a solid contender. Polls, meanwhile, put Carson in the middle of a mix of a growing circle of Republican candidates that could soon include former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Wisconsin gov. Scott Walker and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.
