Democratic Rep. Hank Johnson took his frustrations over recent police shootings of blacks to the House floor, saying the incidents have been happening with alarming frequency and then ticking off a list of receent victims.
He referred to South Carolina shooting of Walter Scott, who fled police during a traffic stop and was subsequently killed in a hail of eight bullets. And then he commented: “It feels like open season on black men in American,” a C-SPAN video of his remarks showed.
Johnson also indicated those of other races faced similar dangers in today’s America.
“All Americans are at risk when bad actors in law enforcement use their guns instead of their heads,” he said.
Johnson capped his remarks by reading a list of those recently killed by police officers, including Scott and Michael Brown, the 18-year-old whose shooting death in Ferguson sparked a nationwide and high-pressure discussion about police, race and the communities they serve.
