Police in the nation’s capital city say a shooting that left a U.S. Census Bureau security guard dead actually began with a kidnapping, when a man fighting with his female partner was seen in a car that had been reported as a get-away vehicle in a hostage situation.
Lawrence Buckner ultimately died, after being shot in the chest while serving on duty at the gates of the Suitland Federal Center, Prince George’s County Fire Department spokesman Mark Brady said. He was pronounced dead at a hospital in Cheveryly, Maryland, on Thursday evening.
Buckner had approached a car that fit the description of a kidnapper’s vehicle called in to area police, District Police Chief Cathy Lanier said, during a news conference. He was shot on approach and hit at least once in the chest.
The shooting suspect, meanwhile, fled. Police chased him and he ultimately crashed in the northeast section of the city. The man and police reportedly traded gunfire; the suspect and an officer were shot. WBAL TV said the policeman’s injuries were non-life threatening.
The suspect was taken into custody but little has been released about him.
The incident led to an hours-long lockdown at the Census Bureau facility in Suitland, Maryland. FBI officials have already ruled out any terrorism ties, Fox News reported.
The kidnapped woman has also been reported as safe, police said. WUSA 9 reported Friday morning the shooting suspect was out of surgery, but few other details were known.
