A lesbian couple with three foster children and a nine-year history of togetherness filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court on Monday, challenging Guam’s implied ban on same-sex marriage.
The territory doesn’t explicitly ban gay marriage, yet no longer criminalizes it. When Loretta Pangelinan and Kathleen Aguero, both 28, were denied a license to wed, they decided to press the issue with a suit, the Associated Press reported.
In their complaint, the two – who said they’ve been together for nine years – indicated they were challenging “the discriminatory denial of their freedom to marry in the Territory of Guam.”
Guam’s attorney general, Elizabeth Barrett-Anderson, said the U.S. Supreme Court would likely settle the isssue soon, and whatever the outcome, “Guam would abide,” AP reported.
The attorney for the lesbian couple, Bill Pesche, said his clients would like their case to go before a judge within the next month, though.
